JOB TITLE: Senior Accountant

DEPARTMENT: Administrative

LOCATION: Hybrid (onsite in Sabina & remote)

REPORTS TO: VP of Administration                                                                    

JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Accountant supports the company’s accounting operations, including preparation of financial reports, maintenance of accurate accounting records, and implementation of internal controls and budgets to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This role ensures the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, oversees subsidiary accounting operations, and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements as well as company policies and procedures. The Senior Accountant reports directly to the VP of Administration. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Note: The following list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented, as necessary.)

  1. Maintain accounting policies, procedures, chart of accounts, and an orderly filing system, with effective internal controls over transactions.
  2. Prepare and issue timely financial statements (weekly, monthly, quarterly) and financial reporting of Sabina Farmers Exchange and several business entities, with budget variance reporting; communicate significant findings to management.   
  3. Oversee and execute month-end closing procedures and reconciling accounts, ensuring month-end data translates to system-generated balance sheets and income statements thoroughly, accurately and in accordance with GAAP.
  4. Prepare monthly and quarterly schedules supporting both the financial reports and commodity investment positions.
  5. Oversee accounting department operations, including staff structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives, policies and procedures, and subsidiary accounting functions.
  6. Review and report all daily cash activities; ensure accounts payable, receivables, and bank reconciliations are accurate and timely.
  7. Manage annual budget preparation, corporate reporting, and forecasting, providing financial analysis as needed.
  8. Develop benchmarks to measure company performance and provide recommendations to leadership.
  9. Implement, communicate, and ensure consistent adherence to procedures, protocols and document submission and ensure that all approved adjusting entries are placed in the general ledger to match supporting documents and schedules.
  10. Prepare, retain, and report supporting documentation for financial reports and schedules for internal use, compliance, regulatory agencies, and other entities.
  11. Oversee the monthly inventory operations, including the month-end closeout of Open Link to ensure timeliness and accuracy and prepare the monthly reports of inventory balance. Maintain the consistent integrity of information inserted into Open Link.
  12. Maintain high standards of document management, proactively questioning, identifying, and resolving discrepancies.
  13. Assist with payroll items such as loan deductions, connected to the correct general account ledger.
  14. Participation in preparation of annual audited reports.
  15. Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings and abide by all regulations, company policies, work procedures and instructions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business-related field with 2 – 4 years of experience in accounting or auditing required.   Experience with Open Link and/or grain industry a plus. Strong knowledge of accounting theory and GAAP.

SKILLS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail, accuracy, and time management. Proven problem solving, analytical and computer skills.  Strong familiarity with accounting databases and proficiency in Microsoft Office; Access a plus. Must be highly skilled with numbers and data. Exceptional organizational abilities; deadline-driven and self-motivated.  Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent thinking and judgement with an auditor-like mindset to identify anomalies and errors is essential. 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSE: Must have a valid driver’s license.
